How Solar Works

Although they may look complicated, solar panels have no moving parts and require very little maintenance, other than occasional cleaning. An inverter takes the DC power directly from the solar panels and converts it to the same AC power that your home uses. Solar + battery storage is a great combination but batteries are optional. At PGT Solar Solutions, we care about helping homeowners plan for future energy consumption. Did you know that the average American household consumes 5% more power year over year? That matched with the rising cost of power and fuel, the time to go solar now has never been greater.

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity that your home can use, reducing your electricity bills.  The solar cells, which are also referred to as photovoltaic cells, absorb sunlight during daylight hours.

You now have solar panels working efficiently to transform sunlight into electricity, but the electricity generated is called direct current (or DC) electricity, which is not the type of electricity that powers most homes, which is alternating current (or AC) electricity. Fortunately, DC electricity can easily be changed into AC electricity by a gadget called an inverter. In modern solar systems, these inverters can be configured as one inverter for the entire system or as individual microinverters attached behind the panels.

Your monitoring system sends information about how much power your solar system is producing in real-time so you can maintain optimal system performance.

On cloudy days and overnight, your solar panels may not be able to capture enough sunlight to use for energy; conversely, in the middle of the day when nobody is home, they may collect surplus energy—more than you need to operate your home. That’s why a meter is used to measure the electricity flowing in both directions—to and from your home. Your utility company will often provide credits for any surplus power you send back to the grid. This is known as net metering.

We’re here to answer any questions or concerns you might have on your path to solar. Here are some common questions. If you don’t find your answers here, we’re a phone call away!

What information do you need to start my quote?2022-08-22T23:37:14+00:00

We strive to get you the lowest price and an accurate quote. Providing the following information is essential to access your unique needs and avoid any unforeseen electrical or structural issues which will offset your solar installation project.

  1. Page 1 & 3 of your APS or SRP Electricity Bill is the most reliable record of energy consumption for your home. It allows us to develop an energy use profile customized just for you.
  2. Photos of your electrical panel showing all breakers, zoomed-in photo showing bus-bar rating (ie “200A”), clear photo of label inside panel and a photo from ground to roof-line on side of home with electrical panel.

Rest assured your energy consultant will provide example pictures before your consultation! Get started by scheduling a consultation.

How much can I save exactly?2022-07-27T02:41:36+00:00

Monthly savings can vary depending on the customer’s home electricity usage and the size of the solar system, but generally the larger the solar system, the bigger the savings. You may even be able to reduce your electric bill down to $0! Try our FREE Solar Calculator to learn more about how much solar you will need to offset your current utility bill and possible future bill once you can use more power guilt free i.e. A/C, EV, pool.

How long does the solar installation take?2022-08-22T23:27:08+00:00

Going solar is a process that involves many different organizations which include government, city, HOA, and utility companies. Our goal is to move the solar project through this process as efficiently as possible. Because of the involvement of so many representatives and agents from outside organizations, it is impossible to give a 100% accurate timetable, but most solar installations take 7-12 weeks from signed contract to completion.

Why do I need a solar consultation?2022-07-27T02:45:55+00:00
The purpose of a solar consultation is for us to gather all the information we need to make sure your home is a good fit for solar. This is also a great opportunity to get all your questions answered! Your Energy Consultant will analyze your energy usage and ask questions about future changes in energy consumption — such as adding a pool or a EV — which can dramatically affect your energy bill. Once your energy consultant has this information, our team of highly qualified design engineers will custom tailor a quote for a system that fits your solar needs.
Are there any federal and state incentives still available?2023-02-16T02:33:56+00:00
Yes. If you purchase a solar system, the federal government will give you a 30% tax credit on the total you paid which may be used in a single year or spread out over five years. The current federal solar tax (ITC) credit is set to decrease to 26% in 2033, so the time to go solar and save the most is now! States and local governments offer incentives to assist homeowners to become more sustainable by going solar. The incentives vary from state to state, but may include exemptions from sales taxes on their system, exemptions on property tax increases or compensation for the excess power they produce. We will assist you in attaining all of the incentives you are due.
What are my purchase options?2022-07-27T02:43:01+00:00
You can purchase a solar system, or you can lease a solar system from one of PGT Solar Solution’s lease partners for as little as 0% Down. Get started with a free quote or try our Solar Calculator for some a quick quote.
